We love them! The exotic green fruit that is packed with nutrients for skin and hair. Thousands of years ago the indigenous people of Mexico already swore by the avocado. Reason enough to take a closer look at this natural beautifier and to pass on a few tips.

More than 10,000 years ago avocados were already planted in tropical and subtropical areas of Central America. The Spanish originally brought the fruit to the Caribbean, to Chile and Madeira, from where it finally found its way to Africa and Asia. It wasn’t planted around the Mediterranean until the beginning of the 20th century.

Incidentally, avocados don’t ripen on the tree. They fall hard to the ground where they fully ripen. If you want a perfect avocado you have to buy the hard fruit in the supermarket, wrap it with an apple in newspaper at home and leave it at room temperature to ripen to the desired softness. That way they don’t get any unsightly pressure spots from being on the shelf too long or because so many fingers have pushed and prodded them testing for ripeness. The fruits cannot ripen in the fridge – they only need to be refrigerated if you only plan to use half. The other half, albeit with the stone, will keep for a good week in the fridge. Enzymes in the stone preserve the cut fruit. As soon as an avocado is cut it cannot ripen further. Test it first before cutting into the fruit: take the avocado in your hand. If it yields when pressed lightly it is ready to eat.

So, what can you do with an avocado? Lots of things! As a boon for skin and hair and as a base for yummy recipes. Together with the olive the avocado belongs to those fruits with the highest fat content, but their fats are unsaturated fatty acids. These are particularly good for the cardiovascular system, they are easily digested and even help lower the cholesterol level.

Beside healthy vegetable fats avocados contain any number of essential vitamins such as A, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, biotin and vitamin E. Our bodies can produce their own vitamin A from alpha and beta-carotene, which stimulates blood formation and the generation of healthy skin. We also need vitamin A for bones and teeth. 

Avocados are especially good in smoothies. Many nutrients from the other smoothie ingredients, especially the fat soluble ones, can be much better absorbed into the body. Hence the following delicious recipe for the much-praised “green smoothie”. Of course there are countless variations, but this one is not only healthy, it also tastes great. As such it is super for smoothie novices and those who want to start the day more healthily than with coffee and a croissant. A smoothie like this supplies piles of energy and keeps you feeling full for quite a while.

“Green Smoothie” recipe (1 glass):

Always place the liquids in the liquidizer first:
1 dl unsweetened orange juice and 1 dl water.
Add ½ an avocado, a handful of spinach, half a banana, the juice of one lime and some agave syrup.
Mix well and enjoy!

If you prefer a creamier mixture use milk instead of fruit juice. Coconut milk or almond milk taste particularly good. And of course you can try out other fruit such as apple, pear, mango, peach, strawberry, in fact whatever you enjoy eating. You can’t go wrong with smoothies, test a few combinations and have fun creating a new smoothie each morning. Incidentally, children enjoy trying to discover what is hidden in smoothies and in doing so they’re educating their taste buds!

Another classic is Guacamole, which is the perfect partner to corn chips or as a vegetable dip. In Mexico they mix some finely chopped garlic and onion with mashed avocado, add some lemon or lime juice, a chopped tomato and fresh coriander leaves and season with salt and pepper. You can also add yoghurt, cucumber or chilies – whatever you like the taste of.

Avocado also tastes wonderful as a salad dressing! Simply mix some lemon juice, olive oil and white balsamic vinegar and add a tablespoon of pureed avocado. A squirt of agave syrup or liquid honey gives the sauce a delicate sweetness. Season with salt and pepper and you have a homemade dressing – with no additives.

Avocado isn’t just a culinary delight for the body, it also contains vitamins A, C and E which are true beautifiers for skin and hair.

For a refreshing summer face pack you‘ll need half a ripe avocado (peeled and cored), 1 teaspoon natural yoghurt, 1 teaspoon honey and two slices of cucumber.

Mash the avocado with a fork in a small bowl and add the yoghurt and honey. Stir well until well mixed. Apply to face and lay the cucumber slices over your eyes. Listen to “Bossa Nova” music and imagine you’re at a 5-star spa at the beach.

Nourishing avocado oil and the honey, which has a natural antibacterial effect, works together with the yoghurt to cleanse the skin and heal any inflammation. Your skin will be beautifully soft and firm, the pores are refined. The cucumber slices cool and help with swollen eyes.
