Sustainability, nutrition, animal protection: the era of conscious action has begun. And we are confronted by many questions which focus on our day to day existence. Do you and your family ever wonder how you could live a more environmentally-responsible life? Then we can give you a few tips for a sustainable way of living, in harmony with nature. These are little steps, but they are steps in the right direction. Let’s just think about how we can gradually improve our daily living.

Try making your own morning muesli

You can start at breakfast time: instead of reaching for the packets of pre-mixed cereals, which are usually full of sugar and artificial additives, you could try the following: soak rolled oats in milk (besides cows’ milk almond and rice milk also taste great), add a few pieces of chopped fruit, a squirt of lemon juice and sweeten with agave or maple syrup. Wonderful! Another tasty suggestion: combine rolled oats and water in a saucepan and bring briefly to the boil, add raw cocoa powder (pure cocoa, without sugar), sweeten with agave syrup then chop a banana over the top. If you like a bit of crunch, add a few roasted chopped almonds. And it’s ready: a dream in chocolate without refined sugar or artificial ingredients, which children love eating and which provides plenty of sustaining energy!

Herbal salt using home-grown rosemary

So much of what we put on our dining table we can make ourselves. It’s fun and you know where the ingredients have come from (from your own garden or balcony and not from the other side of the continent, and without any hidden damaging additives!). Instead of buying herbal salt in the supermarket, simply make your own: take coarse-grained salt (without anti-clumping agents), pick all the edible herbs you have in your garden or you can find at the forest’s edge and mix everything together in a mixer. A particularly tasty combination: rosemary, thyme and basil leaves produce a wonderful Mediterranean salt which tastes great in both meat marinades and in salad dressings.

Or how about home-made ice tea? Take a handful of fresh mint and two or three sage leaves (“sage leaves” verlinken mit Salbei in Kräuterwelt) and pour over plenty of hot water. Allow to draw for five minutes, remove the herbs, add the juice of half a lemon and sweeten with honey.

Buy from the market around the corner

The most important principle for healthy and environmentally-responsible nutrition is this: buy as many local products as possible and orientate yourself around the seasons. There is bound to be a weekly local market nearby, where you can buy fresh produce. As far as meat is concerned, it is worth making sure that it comes from a source exercising animal welfare. At a market you can usually get information directly from the producers. Do it! Try, feel, taste and ask questions – take a closer look at what you eat each day. We are only as healthy as the nutrition we consume. Take your children to the market, to the shops or the organic food store around the corner. They should also try things, make suggestions for a lunch menu or help you cook their favorite pasta.

A simple home-made meal is much healthier than convenience foods, which hardly contain any vitamins. And most important: enjoy! Don’t just gulp down a meal. Take time to eat, even if your daily routine is hectic. Make an agreement with your family that you will eat at the table – and whenever possible, together. These little daily routines create a small oasis in day to day family life.

Take your own bags with you

Whenever possible avoid waste! That isn’t difficult if you buy at a produce market as mentioned above. Take your own bags, containers and jars with you to put the foodstuffs in. There are an increasing number of shops where you can fill pasta, cheese, nuts and lentils directly into your own containers. Leave the plastic bags and use your own material or paper bags. Use rechargeable accumulators instead of batteries. If you are buying a new camera, make sure it has a rechargeable accumulator.

Healthy lollipops for little lolly-lovers

If you are making increasingly more meals yourself, you will notice that you are automatically generating less rubbish. You can make ice lollies in reusable molds, freshly ground coffee tastes much better than pressed out of capsules. You can easily make your own sweets too, avoiding aluminum or plastic packaging. Try these tasty “lollipops”: you need fresh fruit such as apples, strawberries or sliced bananas. Warm some coconut oil in a saucepan, add raw cocoa powder and a few squirts of agave syrup. Spear the fruits individually on wooden skewers and dip half of the fruit in the chocolate mixture. Allow to cool and enjoy (if it is hot outside place dipped fruit in the freezer for five minutes)!

Get healthy naturally

If you or your little one has the flu of a cold you don’t need to dash straight to the pharmacy and spend a lot of money on medication. Try some natural home remedies first. You’ll be amazed at the power of herbs. Ein Salbeitee  not only helps an upset stomach, but also respiratory illnesses.  A steam bath with chamomile opens the airways and allows you to sleep peacefully afterwards. Listen to your gut-feeling – sometimes such natural remedies are enough to cure you. If, however, illness is severe or there is a sudden fever or rapidly worsening pain, then you should definitely consult a doctor.

Get out and about! 

The best home remedy for a strong immune system is fresh air! Get outside every day with your children: whether for a pleasant walk in the morning, a leisurely snooze in the garden after lunch or an active afternoon playing with friends. Because the sun does us good too – it supplies our bodies with vitamin D (even when it’s cloudy there is sufficient). And vitamin D plays a key role in our health. It regulates thousands of processes in our cells. It is no coincidence that the wave of influenza usually comes in February when our vitamin D store has been used up. Therefore: spend at least half an hour every day in the fresh air!

Let the fresh air into your homes too. Twice a day air through thoroughly for about 15 minutes: that kills many bacteria. Don’t heat too much in the colder months. It is best to sleep at 18°C, whereas the living room should be between 21° and 23° Celsius. Your child’s bedroom should also be about 23° Celsius, especially if they are still young. When they are older you can turn down the temperature a little.

These small tips help make your daily life a bit more ecological and meaningful. Keep your eyes open, follow your instincts, question your habits and talk to your friends and relatives about it. Your consciousness has been awakened – now you have to decide what you make of it. Enjoy your new way of life!
